Scifi Channel Renews 'Stargate: Atlantis'

by Paul William Tenny

stargate-atlantis.jpgI woke up this morning to the news in Variety that the Sci Fi Channel has renewed Atlantis for a fifth season, which I couldn't be more happy about. It's an odd show in a way where there isn't too much comedy so that you can't take it seriously, yet not too much drama that it gets full of itself (like Battlestar Galatica can do at times.) The third season finale and fourth season premier were the best pair for the show yet, and some friends I've spoken with that are big fans of the franchise entirely agree.

We all think the best is yet to come.

On a personal and very selfish level I was hoping this would happen so that my Atlantis spec(s) wouldn't shrivel up and die, and that's certainly a huge relief because I loved nothing more than doing specs for that show. On the other hand, purely speaking as a fan and viewer, I'm thrilled because my favorite haunt isn't going away anytime soon.

My only concern here now is that since season four has wrapped production (as far as I know) the coming strike can't have an effect on it, but if it lasts long enough, it could certainly have an effect on a fifth season, especially if it drags on into June/July and SAG decides to pair up with the writers and REALLY screw things up.

Anyway, congratulations to the fine folks who have been bringing us Stargate for what, 11 years now? Thanks for all the great memories - we're still hanging in there with you. If and when exec-prod Joe Mallozzi updates his blog about this wonderful news, I'll link up to it.
