5 Things to do During The Strike

by Paul William Tenny

With only a few series left to air new episodes in January, there's just not going to be much to watch on TV if you're not a fan of reality for a good long while. That got me thinking of things you could do to get your fix, and if your life is anything like the rest of ours, then there's plenty of things to see now that over the years you just didn't have time for.

But now you do!

  1. Subscribe to Netflix and look up some TV series that you thought you'd probably like, but knew you didn't have time for. For me, that means the second and third seasons of House, and pretty much every season of Lost. With only a handful of new episodes coming for those two shows, now is a great time to rent an entire season and catch up -- commercial free.
  1. Go see some lesser hyped feature films. There are plenty out there that didn't cost $250 million dollars to make that were overloaded with pretty faces but not real acting talent with weak stories, but are still fantastic entertainment. No Country For Old Men is critically acclaimed and a favorite for Best Picture this year, but it won't open big. What's the worst that can happen, you'll be disappointed? Not like that's not going to happen anyway, right?

  2. Gaming has skyrocketed in popularity in the past few years and there's no reason you can't get your game on, regardless of how old you are, or what you do for a living. Blood and guts all look the same splattered on a wall, you know? Plus if you go with a gaming console, you'll end up with an extra DVD player to boot.

  3. Think everything you see on TV and in the theaters is crap? Put pen to paper (or rather fingers to keyboard) and put your money where your mouth is. If you've got any kind of talent and lots of determination, you might just end up on the other end of some disgruntled viewer ranting about how much you suck at writing.

  4. Get out and vote this year.

Or you could just sit there and keep complaining. Me? I've got some catching up to do. Lost, Dr Who, and oh yeah don't forget the new season of Torchwood on BBC America in January!
